An inflammatory effect is the body's immune response to injury, infection or irritation, which can cause swelling, redness, heat and pain in the affected area.
Inflammation is part of healing. A cut that turns red and warm is the immune system sending more blood and immune cells to the area. Long-lasting, low-level inflammation is different and is linked with a range of health conditions.
Researchers have looked at whether inflammation is linked with ADHD, autism or depression. The findings so far are mixed. They do not change how either condition is assessed or diagnosed.
No blood test for inflammation can diagnose ADHD or autism. If you have a long-term inflammatory condition, include it in your health history for your assessment, because it may matter for medication choices.
