Neuroimaging means any technique that produces pictures of the brain's structure or activity, including MRI, functional MRI, CT and PET scans.
Structural imaging shows what the brain looks like. Functional imaging, such as functional MRI, shows which areas are more active during a task.
Research using neuroimaging has helped show that ADHD and autism involve real differences in how the brain develops and works. It has also been used to claim far more than it can support. A brain scan of one person cannot tell you whether they have ADHD or autism.
Neither condition is diagnosed with a scan in Ireland or the UK. A clinical assessment of your history and current life is the method used. If a clinic offers a scan-based ADHD diagnosis, ask which guidance it follows.
