Tics are sudden, repeated movements or sounds that a person feels an urge to make, such as blinking, shrugging, sniffing or throat-clearing.
A tic often follows an uncomfortable feeling or urge. It can sometimes be suppressed for a while, which is tiring. Tics tend to change over time and often increase with stress, excitement or tiredness.
Tourette syndrome is diagnosed when both motor and vocal tics have been present for more than a year, starting before age 18. Tic disorders often occur alongside ADHD, and many people with Tourette syndrome also have ADHD.
Tics are different from stimming, which usually feels calming or enjoyable and helps with regulation. If you have tics, mention them at your ADHD assessment, because they can affect medication planning.
